What is a normal heart rate range? Your Heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. To determine your normal heart rate range you need to measure your resting heart rate.

The resting heart rate is used to gauge the health of a person as it can tell how efficiently one's heart and lungs work. The lower the resting heart rate, the healthier the person. (Although Certain scientific studies disagree with using resting heart rate to determine a person's health.)

Certain factors like sex, age, physical fitness, medication, stress level etc. can influence the resting heart rate.

The resting heart rate should be measured first thing in the morning after you wake up and before you begin your daily activities. Measuring your resting heart rate at regular intervals to gauge your health improvement.

How to Measure your Resting Heart Rate

-x- There are 2 methods to measuring resting heart rate: By measuring the radial pulse (wrist) or measuring the carotid pulse (neck).
-x- For the Radial Pulse - Place the tips of the index and third fingers on the thumb side of your wrist. Hold the finger tips gently & measure the pulse for 60 seconds.
-x- For the Carotid Pulse - Place your index and third finger tips gently below your jaw, on the windpipe and throat. Measure the pulse for 60 seconds.

Measure again to confirm. And measure during the week again.


Using a Resting Heart Rate Chart to determine your normal heart rate zone.

Many health professionals keep an eye on the resting heart rate to monitor health progress. During a physical training regime, a resting heart rate chart will help you monitor your health improvement.

With physical training, the heart becomes stronger and so your RHR improves. Your resting heart rate should be about 20 beats per minute less than your normal heart rate.
