Body Fat Index Calculator

fat burning report

The body fat index calculator (or body fat percentage calculator) below uses standards based on the U.S. Navy Circumference Method. The equations used in Military body fat calculators have been found to be the most reliable form of body fat percentage measurement.

(Note: Don't confuse Body Fat Index with Body Mass Index (BMI) it's not the same thing. BMI categorizes your height / weight measurements only. See our BMI calculator chart.)

For men three body measurements (height, neck circumference and waist) are used to estimate the percentage of body fat.
Fore women four body measurements (height, neck, waist and hips circumference) are used to calculate the body fat percentage.

Take measurements as following:

  • Height: measured without shoes
  • Waist Circumference: Men measure at the navel height, Women measure at the narrowest point
  • Neck Circumference: Measure just below the larynx (it will be a slightly downward sloping measurement)
  • Hips Circumference: (women only) at the widest point

Body Fat Percentage:

The body fat index calculator calculates body fat percentage using formulas from the Naval Health Research Center. Men and women require different calculations because men tend to accumulate fat around the waist (the apple body shape) while women tend to accumulate fat in the hips and buttocks (the pear body shape).

Body fat percentage categories by the American Council on Exercise:

  Women Men
Essential fat    10-12% 2-4%
Athletes 14-20% 6-13%
Fitness 21-24% 14-17%
Acceptable 25-31% 18-25%
Obese 32% or more 26% or more

I prefer the body fat percentage categories published by the World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health as they take age into account.
