After several years of research scientists have concluded that sleep and weight are related. So much so that people who do not sleep well, or enough, are much more prone to fat gain!

There is a simple explanation: When our bodies can't fully relax they go into Survival mode. Very simply put, survival mode basically means that your body will try to burn the least amount of calories possible to keep it functioning. Things that trigger survival mode are starvation (or low calorie diets), extreme temperatures and of course lack of sufficient rest...

After a restless night we find ourselves with a sluggish metabolism and a greater appetite, especially for high caloric food. Insufficient sleep decreases your metabolic rate not only causing you to burn fewer calories during sleep but also you begin the day with a sluggish metabolic rate.

It's for this very reason that, other than exercise and good nutrition, sleep can play a very big role in weight loss.

Best Way To Lose Weight: The relationship between sleep and weight

There is also another factor to consider: The less we sleep, the more hours in a day we will have to eat.
The University of Michigan has found that by replacing one hour of inactivity (like watching TV) with one hour of sleep is equivalent to about a 6% reduction in daily calories consumed.

Appetite and cravings for high calorie foods...

"Reducing the hours of sleep, also causes changes in appetite", say researchers at the University of Chicago in the United States. Lack of sleep notably decreases levels of the satiety hormone, Leptin, while they increase the levels of Ghrelin, the hunger hormone.
As a result, appetite can increase by 24% with stronger cravings for sweet foods, salt and carbohydrates.


A good idea for those who want to lose weight, but suffer from insomnia, would be to consult a specialist to relieve stress before beginning a weight loss program.

Honestly, what could be a more fun way to lose weight than to sleep an extra hour a night?!

Is sex the best way to lose weight?
Many daily activities can help us to burn calories and lose weight but none are as fun as sex! Discover the amount of calories burned while having sex...

Making love involves a complex combination of muscle movements and aerobic activities during which you burn lots of calories - you just don't realise it because you're having so much fun. Isn't this the way weight loss was meant to be?!


Studies have shown, and No I don't have the video clips of those studies, that 20-minutes of sex can burn about 150 calories (and about 3 condoms) which is like a brisk walk or climbing stairs!

Of course to improve performance and duration of the sexual activity it's necessary to take your time and be creative, rather than just going "balls to the wall", if you'll excuse the pun.


A good idea would be to consult the famous Kamasutra, which is now quite up to date with a very sufficient array of self explanatory graphic pictures. This includes details of sexual positions, movements and practices for giving and receiving pleasure. The illustrations are educational and quite exciting... ahem.

Feeling Blue?
According to studies the color blue tends to suppress appetite. Vibrant colors like red and orange (found in many fast food establishments) stimulate the appetite. So wear blue and surround yourself with blue.

Hula-Hoop.
Come on, everyone is young enough to Hulla-Hoop!
Challenge your partner and friends, see who can keep it up the longest (the Hulla-Hoop). This is a low-intensity fun, easy, cheap and entertaining way to burn that fat. Do it during commercials or when the mood strikes you, but don't forget to post your videos to Youtube... ;-)

Grow a Garden.
Growing your own vegetables is good exercise (really good exercise!), it saves you money, and adds a whole lot of nutrition to your diet. It's also a great way to destress, and we already know: Reducing your stress level means sleeping better, which means a higher metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories!

Get Rid of the Office Chair (well not entirely)
Alternate between using your office chair and a stability ball. You’ll immediately notice an improvement in posture, you’ll burn lots more calories, and improve core strength.
Worried about strange looks around the office? Yeah wait a month and you'll see how many of your co-workers will follow the lead...

Listen to Music
Turn up the radio or put on a dance CD. Dancing is fun, it's destressing, lifts your mood and makes you remember to not take life so seriously. Sing (or shout) along, for no other reason than to prove to my wife that I'm not the only one with a hideous singing voice.
Of course dancing burns mega calories, and (as with growing a garden) it has the added knock on effect of burning additional calories from being less stressed about life.

And.... If you want to get the MAXIMUM effect then listen to Dance Music while Gardening and at the same time swing a Blue Hulla-Hoop around your left leg while singing the National Anthem.
